Chakalaka is a spicy South African relish that goes with everything but is especially great with barbecue, or braai as it’s known in South Africa. Chakalaka is light, mildly spicy, and super easy to make thanks to our Chakalaka Spice.

Ingredients

Serves 6-8

  • 1/4 Cup Neutral Cooking Oil

  • 1 Medium Red Onion, diced

  • 2 Cloves Of Garlic, minced

  • 2 Roma Tomatoes, seeded and diced

  • 1 Small Head Of Red Cabbage, sliced

  • 1 Green Red Bell Pepper, chopped

  • 1 Green Bell Pepper, chopped

  • 1 Organic Cranberry Beans

  • 2 Tablespoons Chakalaka Seasoning

Directions

  1. Sort and rinse the dried cranberry beans. Add these to a large pot of water. Bring to a boil and simmer until tender, skimming off foam as it develops. Strain the beans and set aside.

  2. In the same pot place the oil, onion and garlic. Sweat this over a low heat for 5 minutes and add the tomatoes, cabbage, peppers, South African Chakalaka and beans. Cook this on low covered for 10-15 minutes.
