Balsamic Vinegar Powder is a convenient powdered form of balsamic vinegar that is useful as an ingredient in dry seasoning mixes, dry soups, rubs, marinades, sauces, snack coatings and salad dressings. While it is not recommended as a direct substitute for balsamic vinegar due to its decreased acidity from the dehydration process, it can be used as a seasoning or salt substitute in numerous applications.

Ordinarily vinegar is a liquid consisting mainly of water and acetic acid, which is produced by the fermentation of ethanol by acetic acid bacteria. Vinegar can be made using a wide variety of base liquids, including apple cider, wine, beer, sugar cane juice, even honey. The resulting liquid is characterized by a tangy zip, offset by varying levels of sweetness, depending on the base liquid used and how long the vinegar has been aged.

Although vinegar is best known as a culinary ingredient—commonly used in pickling solutions, salad dressings, sauces and as a condiment—also has numerous other medical and household uses.

In it’s most traditional form balsamic vinegar differs from other vinegars in that it is made from the fresh squeezed juice of Trebbiano (or sometimes Lambrusco) grapes while other vinegars are made from wine. The highest grades of balsamic vinegar (the name comes from the Latin word “balsamum” which means “like a balm” or “restorative”) is aged for 25 years or longer in hard wood casks. Other grades of authentic balsamic vinegar, including Aceto Balsamico di Modena and “ordinary” balsamic vinegar (sometimes called “condimento” grade balsamic vinegar) offer much of the same rich flavors and syrupy texture, although it is sometimes produced using additional ingredients such as starches and gums.

It should be noted that Vinegar Powders are not intended to replace liquid vinegars. They are formulated to be used as a flavor component in seasonings, rubs, marinades, BBQ sauces, gravies, salad dressings, dry mixes and in dietary supplements. They may be used to achieve a desired flavor profile, product viscosity and acid impact.

Our Balsamic Vinegar Powder starts with a premium, commercial-grade balsamic vinegar which is spray-dried (a process which uses a starch such as maltodextrin to carry the flavor in a dry powder). Balsamic Vinegar Powder is a great choice to add the flavor of genuine balsamic vinegar in applications requiring dry ingredients.
