    Suggested uses

    Wasabi is a Japanese root plant of the Brassicaceae family, which also includes horseradish, cabbage and mustard. Occasionally referred to as a Japanese horseradish, this rare plant has proven very difficult to cultivate outside of its native Japan and parts of New Zealand, and is therefore quite expensive. Wasabi plants produce thick, greenish-yellow underground stems, otherwise known as the rhizome or root. Some specialty markets sell fresh wasabi, but most often this intensely flavorful root is transformed into a paste or into a fine powder.

    Wasabi powder is typically blended with water to make a tongue-tingling, sharply flavored paste, most commonly as an accompaniment to sushi and sashimi.
