Ingredients
Organic tamari soy sauce (organic soybeans, salt), organic maltodextrin, salt. Contains soy.
Tamari sauce is often described as a mellower, less salty tasting version of soy sauce. The production of tamari actually predates what we call soy sauce, going all the way back to at least the 7th century. To make tamari, cooked soy beans are allowed to ferment under specific conditions. As the beans ferment they become a dark red paste (which is actually miso paste) and give off a dark, protein-rich liquid rich in salty umami flavors. This liquid is tamari, which means "that which accumulates" in Japanese.
Tamari is used both as a cooking ingredient and a table condiment and dipping sauce in various Asian cuisines, and has become a staple throughout much of the Western world as well. Its rich, savory flavor packs a punch of umami that few ingredients can match, and its flavor profile blends easily with other ingredients, making it a versatile workhorse in the kitchen. As a result, it is used in a variety of culinary applications beyond the classic Asian stir-fries and sushi, from sauces, soups and seasoning blends to snacks, dips, meat and poultry dishes.
