Ingredients
Organic brown rice.
After rice is harvested, the grain is allowed to dry and the outer hull removed. The remaining germ and bran, which give the rice its tan color and a pleasantly chewy texture, constitutes brown rice. There are currently over 40,000 varieties of cultivated rice and each has a brown form. In contrast, white rice is rice which has been further processed and polished.
Brown rice is relatively low in starch (compared to other forms of rice) and tends to cook up as light, fluffy individual grains that do not stick together. Because it is eaten with its bran layer intact, brown rice is considered a whole grain food. Since the bran is actually eaten, brown rice is high in fiber and rich in phytonutrients and trace minerals. It boasts a low glycemic index and contains 7 percent of the fiber required for a 2,000-calorie diet. One cup of brown rice delivers 80 percent the average person’s requirement for manganese, a mineral critical to brain and nerve function. Brown rice also delivers 2.5 times the iron of its white counterpart, and a rich source of selenium.
Organic Brown rice is delicious in a wide variety of preparations, from salads to pilafs to stuffing and much more.
