Kermes Rice is a heritage product, cultivated for hundreds of years in the Hebei province of eastern China. Highly valued for its deep red color and rich nutrition, Kermes rice was once offered to the Imperial Court during the Qing Dynasty. But Kermes Rice fell out of favor during the Cultural Revolution of the mid-20th Century, when the provincial government required Hebei farmers to plant varieties of rice with higher yields. The recent increase in interest in heirloom foodstuffs has made the time right for the reintroduction of Kermes Rice. Careful commercial cultivation has increased the crop yield without affecting the rice’s nutritional content.

Our Kermes Rice is carefully cultivated to be free of GMOs and contains no artificial colors. It is also naturally gluten free and contains more than twice the amino acid content of more common varieties of rice.

The word “Kermes” refers to a type of natural red dye (“Kermes Red”) that was one of the richest red colorings available before chemical colorants were developed. However Kermes Rice is a naturally red rice and contains no added colors of any kind.
