Juniper Berries, or Juniperus cummunis, are technically female seed cones with a berry-like appearance. They are used as a spice, particularly in European cuisine, and are responsible for the flavoring of gin.
Blossoming from small shrubs across the Northern Hemisphere, Juniper Berries are used primarily impart a sharp, clear piney flavor to game meat and sauerkraut.
The history of Juniper Berries' use dates back to the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans who used them for medicine and health benefit, believing their consumption contributed to increased stamina. Their medicinal value remained strong through the 17th century, when they were used as a diuretic, arthritic pain reliever and appetite stimulant.
Today, their use stretches to essential oils, aromatherapy and perfumery.
