Ingredients
Caraway seeds.
Caraway Seed, or "Carum carvi," is an exceptionally old spice with some speculating its origin dating back to the Stone Age. It is a hearty, biennial plant in the Apiaceae family, native to western Asia, Europe and Northern Africa. Its plant resembles carrot, growing from deep, long roots and sprouting feathery leaves and pink or white flowers.
The use of Caraway Seed is most common in European cuisine, most famously for its presence in German rye bread or as a topping to scones and other breakfast pastries. The licorice-flavored seeds are also used in several liqueurs, including Kummul and some Schnapps.
Beyond its culinary use, Caraway Seed and its oils has been long regarded for its ability to soothe the digestive system, treat toothaches and aid rheumatism due to its numbing properties.
Classic recipe
Seedless Light Rye Bread
Classic rye bread is the choice for deli sandwiches or just toast with butter. This version is without whole caraway seeds but the flavor is distinctively rye with our Ground Caraway. Double this recipe to make two loaves and keep one in the freezer.
