Tart Cherries are best known as the beloved main ingredient in pies, tarts and danishes, but the attractive red color and sweet-tart flavor of these dried Tart Cherries makes them well suited for sweet and savory cooking applications, from salads, bread and stuffing to ice cream, muffins and scones.
Native to Europe and Southwest Asia, settlers brought Tart Cherries to America in the early 1600s. Although cherries are grown in more than 20 countries, the United States remains the leader in production, with most Tart Cherries being harvested in Northern Michigan, Utah, New York and Washington.
Tart Cherries are highly valued for their health benefits, particularly among athletes, many of whom appreciate their anti-inflammatory and painkilling properties after a strenuous workout. They are also rich in disease-fighting antioxidants and vitamins A and C.
