Strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa) are cultivated in temperate regions all over the world, and are valued for their tantalizing aroma, bright red color, juicy texture and sweetness. They are an extremely popular fruit, and are eaten in large quantities fresh, preserved, dried and in processed form in numerous industrial food products. The garden-variety strawberry was first cultivated as a hybrid in Brittany, France, in the 1750s using two different wild species-Fragaria virginiana from Eastern North America and Fragaria chiloensis from Chile-but cultivation of wild strawberries dates as far back as the 14th century.
Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, providing more per serving than an orange. They are also high in dietary fiber and antioxidants.
Strawberries are popular in numerous culinary applications due to their rich flavor and color, from jam-making and sweet dessert sauces to ice cream, sorbet and baked goods. Our dried Strawberries can be used in conjunction with or instead of fresh strawberries in many of these applications.
