Thought to have originated in the western Chinese foothills of the Tian Shan mountain range, Pear trees soon spread to the Middle East and Europe, and came to the New World in the late 18th century. Early Romans developed over 50 Pear varieties and spread them far and wide throughout Europe.
There are now about 20 primary subspecies and more than 3,000 varieties of Pears grown around the world, including the European Pear, from which many of our more familiar varieties have been cultivated.
Pears are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C (most of it found in the skin) and K and potassium.
