Ingredients
Peppermint.
Peppermint is thought to be a naturally occurring hybrid between spearmint and watermint. The plant is hearty and robust, able to grow in almost every climate and geographical location. Peppermint is one of the two most popular forms of mint (the other is spearmint). Of the two, peppermint has a more pronounced, assertive and almost peppery flavor (hence the name).
Its culinary use is wide, ranging from garnishment of beverages, infusions into ice creams or sprinkled onto salads for a bright, earthy flavor. Its commercial production began in Europe in the 1700s.
The herb's medicinal use dates back at least 10,000 years, used to treat nausea and other digestive disorders. It has also been used as a cooling agent in cough syrups and in a compress to alleviate headaches. The ancient Greeks are thought to have used the herb for wine making, sauces and decoration.
