The Camargue region of France is located along the Mediterranean coast between Marseille and Montpelier. Rice has been grown in this wetland region since the 16th century. This region is designated a protected geographic appellation to ensure lesser quality food ingredients from other regions cannot be sold under the renowned Camargue name.
The region is also known for its legally protected nature reserves where eagles, hawks and other birds fly free.
